APPARATUS AND ASSAY METHOD

A solid support is disclosed used for capture and assay of an analyte, which support contains both positive and negative control regions is provided. The support is formed from at least one continuous, smooth, surface having three distinct zones in close physical proximity: (i) a first zone to which is attached an antigen; (ii) a second zone to which is attached a binding partner specific for the antigen; and (iii) a third zone to which no antigen or binding partner is attached. When the analyte to be assayed is microorganismal in origin, the support also may be used for growing the microorganism that the analyte reaches a detectable level. A method of using the support in an assay also is provided. In the method, a sample solution is contacted with the support, which is then contacted with an agent that is a binding partner for the antigen. The binding of the agent to the first, second and third zones of the support is then determined and the results of the assay are read. A kit for performing assays also is provided. The kit includes the solid support and also may include reagent solutions and reaction vessels for conducting the assay.
