The invention relates to a gas heating appliance and a method for its operation. In this method, the economy-burning efficiency of gas appliances having one or more atmospheric, hyperstoichiometrically premixing gas burners and a convective heat exchanger is increased in that the pulse at the injector of the burner or burners, which diminishes upon setting the appliance to economy burning, causes a reduction in the air mass flow flowing through the heating element. A heating appliance described as an exemplary embodiment has an extruded section (1) serving as heat exchanger. The air required for the combustion is supplied to the combustion chamber solely via the injector (6) of a hyperstoichiometrically premixing burner (4). <IMAGE>
