Tufting machine with an individual needle bar or with a plurality of needle bars provided with loop-forming fingers which are arranged above the carrier fabric or the basic fabric. By means of these loop-forming fingers, loop-stitch rows are formed on the top side of the carrier fabric and pile-loop rows are formed on the rear side, in that the needles are displaced laterally during the formation of the loops. Methods are shown as to how this machine is operated in conjunction with yarn-feed pattern-control devices, pattern-controlled needle-bar positioning mechanisms and a controllable fabric feed, in order to produce a plurality of new and pattern-like fabrics which can otherwise be produced only on weaving looms and knitting machines. The fabrics produced have many advantages, such as, for example, a lower stitch density, a better covering of the carrier fabric, a lower resistance during sliding movement, improved abrasion resistance and better draping properties.
