Plastic packing materials for trickling filters are known whose strips have a uniform cross-section over their length and are joined together via a transverse holding web. The strips are arranged in a plurality of layers one above the other to increase the strip density. In the packing material according to the invention, the strips are reduced in their cross-section in at least the area of the holding web and preferably immediately to the left and/or right of the holding web. The strips can thus be arranged in one layer with increased effective strip density. Packings formed in this manner serve for biological wastewater purification.
