A description is given of a child safety seat (10) for a motor vehicle which can be secured to a vehicle seat by means of a seat belt (28) present in the motor vehicle. The child safety seat (10) has a seat shell with a back rest element (14) which is constructed with a back rest (16) and with side pieces (18) protruding forwards from the back rest (16). In the transition region between the back rest (16) and each of the two side pieces (18) the back rest element (14) is constructed with a hole (20) which is provided for the vehicle seat belts (28) to pass through so that the vehicle seat belt (28) bears against the front surface of the back rest (16). <IMAGE>
