PURPOSE:To manufacture a tough silicon carbide sintered body suitable for heat resistant structual member by mixing specified ratios of a specified metal such as rare earth element and Al respectively with silicon carbide as a main body and sintering said mixture. CONSTITUTION:To silicon carbide as the main body, 6-30vol% metal of one kind or more selected from elements of the periodic table IIIa, IVa, Va, VIa, VIIa, VIIIgroups, rare earth elements, and 0.2-20vol% Al or Al compound expressed in terms of Al are mixed. The metals are Cr, Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, Hf, W which react with silicon carbide and form mainly carbide respectively. Metal particles diameter is set to 30 times or more that of raw material powder of silicon carbide. Said mixture is heated to max. 1,900-2,200 deg.C temp. under pressing, then cooled immediately without held at the max. temp., and the temp. rising and lowering rate are set to about 10-50 deg.C/min. |
