A liquid crystal display comprises a pair of substrates (1), transparent electrodes (12) respectively formed thereon and a liquid crystal material layer (14) inserted between the electrodes, a liquid crystalline polymer orientation layer (13) formed on at least one of the liquid crystal material layers, the liquid crystalline polymer orientation layer functioning as an optical phase retardation film. The phase retardation of the light transmitting liquid crystal layer is compensated by the liquid crystalline polymer orientation layer, which enhances contrast.
