A grain level checking apparatus is used with a grain auger. It includes a filament that extends the length of the auger and is supported in guide tubes attached to the auger tube. At the upper end of the auger, the filament is attached to a weight, while at the lower end a length of the filament is wound on the spool. When the filament is released from the spool, the weight will draw the filament down into a grain bin being filled until the weight reaches the grain. At that point, the amount of travel of the filament along the auger tube can be determined and used as a direct measure of the height of grain in the bin.
