PURPOSE:To obtain a homogenous compact with the number of pores and metal content minimized by specifying the content of a amorphous carbon consisting of the pyrolysis product of phenolic resin, the metal content of the coexistent metallic material and the number of pores having a specified diameter to homogenize the composition. CONSTITUTION:The surface layer of a granular phenolic resin contg. <=1wt.% water and having >=50mum grain diameter and 60-100mm thermal fluidity measured by the disk cure method is coated with 0.2-5wt.%, based on the resin, of a low-surface tension material having 30-160 deg.C m.p. The resin is formed by transfer molding, injection (compression) molding or extrusion, and the obtained compact is fired and carbonized at 500-3000 deg.C in vacuum or in an inert gas atmosphere to obtain a compact contg. >=95wt.% of amorphous carbon consisting of the pyrolysis product of a phenolic resin, with the metal content of the coexistent metallic material controlled to <=300wt.% and the number of the open cells having >=100mum diameter to<one piece per 1cm<2> and having no grain boundary in the internal structure. |
