<p>The engine has a piston (2) reciprocating in a cylinder (1), and a main combustion space (5) formed between the piston and the cylinder head (4). There is an auxiliary combustion space (7) formed in a recess in the cylinder head. An inlet valve (10) admits a rich mixture into the main combustion space (5). A second valve (14) admits air without fuel into the auxiliary combustion spae (7). A sparking plug (12) ignites the rich mixture in the main space and combustion spreads to the auxiliary chamber (7) through the interconnecting passage (6). The admission of the rich mixture to the main space and its ignition there gives cleaner total combustion. Admission to the auxiliary chamber is cut off during cold running and at full load.</p> |
