To produce such a foil, one surface of a backing foil (1) is blasted with steel balls, depressions (2) distributed evenly over the surface being produced, whose depth and diameter are kept equal as far as possible. A layer of nickel (5) is applied by electroplating on the surface thus formed. A foil is thus obtained which has the same properties as a solid nickel foil, but at far less expenditure. The foil is used on the circumferential surface of printing machine cylinders to prevent smearing of a freshly printed sheet. <IMAGE>
