PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound in high quality and yield by dehalogenating and dimerizing 4-hydroxy-4'-halogenobiphenyls in the presence of a Pd catalyst in an aqueous solution of NaOH, etc., with a reducing agent of hydroxylamines. CONSTITUTION:This method for producing a 4,4'''-dihydroxyquaterphenyl expressed by formula II (R is H, an alkyl or an acyl) or a derivative thereof is to dehalogenate and dimerize a 4-hydroxy-4'-halogenobiphenyl expressed by formula I (X is a halogen) or a derivative thereof in the presence of a palldium catalyst and using hydroxylamine or a salt thereof as a reducing agent in an aqueous solution of one or two more of alkali metals or alkaline earth metallic hydroxides or bicarbonates. The method has no special problem from the viewpoint of safety, sanitation and prevention of pollution without requiring special chemicals, apparatuses or operations. The compound expressed by formula II is useful as various industrial raw materials, especially a raw material for liquid crystal compounds for liquid crystal displays or highly heat-, oil- and chemical-resistant polymeric compounds, modifying agents for synthetic rubbers, etc. |
