The monitoring device comprises a drive part (1) on which a top part (2) is arranged which carries a camera (8). The head (7) in which the camera is mounted can be rotated about horizontal and vertical axes and permits any desired positioning of the camera (2). In addition, the top part carries an image-reproducing apparatus (9) on which films and information can be represented. As a result of automatic control, the device can patrol automatically or in a remote-controlled manner through a sales area. As a result of its multiplicity of functions, the degree of acceptance of the device on the part of the customers is high. Nonetheless, as a result of its mobility, it is a highly effective anti-theft means. <IMAGE>
