In the case of a chopper with a rotating cutter disc (3) arranged in a channel-shaped cutting housing (2) and with an admission shaft (12) extending upwards from the cutting housing (2), the aim is to reduce the operating noise. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that the drive motor (7) is designed as a slow-speed motor, that a wall lining (10) formed by insulating mats is provided in the area of the cutting housing (2), that the admission shaft (12) has a clear cross-section corresponding approximately to an entry-proof opening and is lined on the outside with an insulating mat (13), that the interior of the admission shaft (12) is separated from the intake funnel (16) by a self-closing return flap arrangement (18) consisting of rigid material, and that the intake funnel (16) merges with a housing (14) surrounding the admission shaft (12) at a distance. <IMAGE>
