The invention relates to an alkaline secondary battery which contains a cadmium-free positive electrode having a reduced swelling ratio and in which the cycle characteristic and the charging effectiveness are improved when used at high temperatures. This alkaline secondary battery comprises a positive electrode which is arranged in a housing and has a structure in which a paste containing nickel hydroxide particles, an electrical conductor and a binder is charged into a porous metal body, a negative electrode which is arranged in the housing in such a way that it lies opposite the positive electrode with a separator arranged sandwich-like inbetween, and an alkaline electrolyte present in the housing. The nickel hydroxide particles which are present in the positive electrode have a structure in which zinc and cobalt in amounts of from 1.0 to 5.0 % by weight or from 1.5 to 5.0 % by weight, based on nickel hydroxide, are coprecipitated with metallic nickel. The nickel hydroxide particles also have a half-height width of a peak in a (101) plane in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern (2 theta ) of 0.8 DEG or more. |
