A method and apparatus for grinding workpieces in which the load or power applied to a grinding wheel 14 is sensed and used to control the feed rate of a dressing wheel 16 which maintains the grinding effectiveness of the grinding wheel, whereby excessive wear on grinding and dressing wheels during portions of a grinding operation in which significant grinding of a workpiece 12 is not effected, is avoided. <IMAGE>
