PISTON FOR USE IN A FLUID PUMP LOW PRESSURE ACCUMULATOR ASSEMBLY

A low pressure accumulator assembly (22) for use with a fluid pump (20) comprises a pump housing (26) with a longitudinally extending chamber (32) having a base (30) with a fluid flow opening (24). An accumulator is secured in the pump housing chamber. The accumulator (29) includes an accumulator housing (36) with a longitudinally extending bore (40). A piston (44) is biased outwardly of the bore (40) to selectively engage the base (30) of the pump housing chamber. A protrusion (56) extends outwardly from the piston (44) to limit an area of engagement between the piston (44) and the base (30) so that fluid flowing from said opening (24) into the chamber (32) may engage a greater area of the piston (44).
