The invention relates to a method for controlling the charge cycle of an internal combustion engine with a combustion chamber and with inlet and exhaust ports opening out into the said chamber, the gas flow in the inlet port being controlled by a piston slide valve, positively controlled by way of a control cam, a part of the piston slide valve partially defining the combustion chamber. In order to form a charge cycle control of the generic type as simply and economically as possible so that the thermodynamic efficiency of the internal combustion engine is improved in the partial load range, it is proposed according to the invention that at least one piston slide valve be used as control element for load control and that the lift of the piston slide valve be variable by varying the cam control curve of the control cam and/or by varying the lifting curve of the piston slide valve as a function of operating parameters of the internal combustion engine, in such a way that, at full load, the geometric compression ratio is smaller than at partial load.
