The invention relates to a method of masking, when necessary, the infra-red signature of a heat source and devices implementing the method. The method consists in generating and maintaining, around the source, a selective screen formed by the suspension in the atmosphere of particles having a coefficient of absorption matched to the wavelength of each band to be attenuated in the infra-red emission spectrum of the source, the perimeter of the particles being less than or close to the said wavelength and their volumetric concentration procuring the sought attenuation factor. The devices comprise a reservoir 1 of particles, a doser 3 and a disperser 6. Application to the protection of targets of military interest such as a vehicle, an armoured vehicle, a battery, an aircraft, or of cvilian interest such as a fire (light).
