Compounds of formula (I) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, where R is CO2R?12 and R12¿ is H or a biolabile ester-forming group or R is tetrazol-5-yl and either (a) R1 is (Ia) and R2 is F, Cl, Br, I, CH¿3? or CF3 or (b) R?1 is C¿3-C6 alkyl and R2 is C2-C4 alkyl, are selective 5-α-reductase-1 inhibitors.
