In an engine based on the catalytic and/or thermal decomposition of a liquid energy carrier, in particular hydrazine, in which the process gases produced in a decomposition chamber exit via an expansion nozzle, the expansion nozzle and the decomposition chamber are combined to form a joint assembly. The decomposition chamber in this case surrounds the expansion nozzle concentrically and the liquid energy carrier is applied to it in the outlet region of the expansion nozzle. The decomposition products of the energy carrier flow through the decomposition chamber in a direction which is opposite to the direction in which the gases exit from the expansion nozzle.
