An apparatus for treating contaminated, in particular oily and emulsion-laden, materials and a corresponding treatment process are presented and described. Reliable treatment for contaminated materials is achieved with low expenditure in terms of equipment and high economic efficiency by an apparatus which is characterisd by material feed and removal (1, 2), a sump (6) for receiving the material to be treated, an exchange zone (11b) and a calming zone (11c), a conveyor element transporting the material from the sump (6) through the exchange zone (11b) into the calming zone (11c) and a cleaning medium or an extraction medium or a substance to be absorbed or adsorbed being passed into the material via fluid nozzles (13a, 13b) arranged in the area of the exchange zone (11b) and the laden fluid being removed from the apparatus in the area of the sump (6) through suitable valves (8) or the like and filter elements (8a). In accordance with the process, for this purpose the material to be treated is transported in counter-current through a cleaning medium or an extraction medium or a substance to be absorbed or adsorbed flowing in the opposite direction, the material being transported from a sump (6) by at least one conveying element into an exchange zone (11b) and from there into a calming zone (11c) and the laden fluid being removed from the sump (6). <IMAGE>
