An ink reservoir 6 has a delivery aperture 11 for the ink and a chamber 12 containing a capillary member 16. The delivery aperture 11 is closed by a capillary plug 20 and the chamber 12 is arranged so that one end 21 of the member 16 is open directly to the ink while opposite end is connected to the ambient air by way of a ventilation hole 23. The chamber tightly surrounds the capillary member 16 so that air can enter into the ink reservoir 6 from the hole 23 only through the capillary member. The plug 20, has a higher capillarity for the ink than the member 16. The container 1 may supply an ink jet printer or a writing tip (42, Fig. 2). The chamber containing the capillary member may be differently arranged relative to the container 1 (Figs. 3 to 8) and the ventilation hole (35, Fig. 8) may be located in a membrane (36) to pressurise the container. <IMAGE>
