A solids separating apparatus has a screen (4) which is aligned horizontally in a screen basket (2), is fully immersed in the water and has the untreated water flowing through it from bottom to top. The screenings thus accumulate on the underside of the screen (4), while the clean water flows above the screen (4) to a water discharge (15). This manner of channelling water makes it easier to separate the solids out of the dirty water which is to be screened. <IMAGE>
