The invention relates to a silencer of a papermaking installation for reducing emergent noise, in particular on the ventilation supply or discharge lines of a paper mill, having the following features: an outer housing is provided; a cylindrical inner space is provided; the inner space has an air inlet and an air outlet lying axially opposite each other; a multiplicity of sound-absorbing, interchangeable inserts is provided in the inner space. The invention is characterised by the following features: the inserts have the shape of a ring, the ring internal diameter of at least two inserts having a different magnitude.
