An apparatus for burning organic substances is described, having a rotary tube which is driven rotatably about a horizontal axis, at one end of which a charging opening is provided and the other end of which opens into a combustion chamber. A supply line for combustion air also opens into the combustion chamber. In order to design an apparatus of this type, in particular for burning residual wood with greatly differing sizes of the pieces, so that it is more effective, it is proposed to have the supply line for combustion air enter via an annular gap at the end of the rotary tube connected to the combustion chamber.
