The object of the present invention is to create a pump which also has good suction behaviour at the top dead centre of the delivery plunger (31). To this end, an arrangement of lifting elements is proposed which are contained in a transmission element (41) and serve at the top dead centre of the delivery plunger (31) to compress the valve spring (43). The opening pressure of the suction valve or valves (33, 34) at the top dead centre of the delivery plunger (31) is thereby reduced. A volumetric flow into the pressure chamber (36) can thus take place immediately when the delivery plunger (31) is set in motion towards its bottom dead centre. Thus the full pressure which arises on the suction side can be utilised for accelerating the pressure medium without losses due to valve admission pressures. <IMAGE>
