The invention relates to a filter for cleaning liquids, in particular fuel or oil, having an essentially vertically arranged filter housing (10) and a hollow cylindrical filter cartridge (2) arranged in the filter housing (10), the filter housing (10) being provided with a base (11) having an inlet (13) for the liquid to be cleaned to the outer periphery of the filter cartridge (2) and having an outlet (14) for cleaned liquid from the interior (21) of the filter cartridge (2), the filter housing (10) being further provided with a central rising tube (4) extending from the base (11) into the interior (21) of the filter cartridge (2) over the height thereof and the filter housing (10) being closed at the top by a detachable cover (12). The novel filter is characterised in that the rising tube (4) is sealed off from the interior (21) of the filter cartridge (2), apart from a vent channel (41) connecting this interior (21) to the interior (40) of the rising tube (4) at its upper end and in that the interior (40) of the rising tube (4) is connected at its lower end to a drain channel (15) further provided in the base (11). <IMAGE>
