The invention relates to a hydrogenating dehalogenating catalyst for hydrogenating disposal of halogenated hydrocarbons and to a process for its reactivation. The catalyst comprises solid metallic nickel having a specific gravity of 0.01 to 2.0 g/cm<3> and a specific surface area of 0.01 to 1 m<2>/g which was thermally treated at temperatures of 800 to 1200 DEG C in an air atmosphere for a duration of 0.25 to 10 h and was then treated in a hydrogen stream at temperatures of 200 to 600 DEG C. The exhausted catalyst can be virtually completely reactivated by thermal treatment at temperatures of 800 to 1200 DEG C for a duration of 0.25 to 10 h in air atmosphere.
