An internal junction electroluminescent device (100) is disclosed containing, in sequence, an anode (102,104), an organic hole injecting and transporting zone (106), an organic electron injecting and transporting zone (112) forming a junction (114) with the organic hole injecting and transporting zone (106), and a cathode (116) comprised of a layer contacting the organic electron injecting and transporting zone (106) containing a combination of magnesium and aluminum.
