An installation for monitoring the suspension of solids in a fluid medium as when using a barium salt for X-ray contrast intensification crack detection employs the fluids response to ultra-violet irradiation as a quantitative index of solids content. The UV light source (L) radiates within a narrow spectrum registered by the sensor (52) and illuminate a transparent settling chamber (P) positioned in a bypass to the main circulation. The fluorescent intensity is able to be compared with a standard suspension illuminated by the same source (L) by means of a further chamber and the sensor outputs are evaluated by a computer (2) over a time interval (U).
