The invention is a process and an apparatus for removing metal contamination from soil. In the method, the soil is treated (2) to produce soil with a small particle size. The particulate soil is then separated (4) into a coarse fraction (9) and a fine fraction (3). The coarse fraction (9) and the fine fraction (3) are contacted with a leach solution in separate contacting zones (8 and 14) to remove the metal contamination from the soil, the metal is removed from the leach solution and the leach solution recycled to the leaching zones.
