The invention relates to a process for disposal of waste materials of all types in which these are subjected to a high-temperature treatment for thermal material separation and conversion. For this purpose, the unsorted and uncomminuted material to be disposed of is first compacted in batches with accompanying liquid contents present and, maintaining the pressure burden, is introduced in a form-fitting manner into a slide duct heated to more than 100 DEG C. In the duct it is kept sliding in frictional contact with the duct walls at least until the liquid contents have evaporated. The remaining solids are directly subjected to a high-temperature treatment at temperatures above 1000 DEG C. The compacted material to be disposed of is continuously relieved from gas pressures in the slide duct over at least some of its sliding path via at least one side-duct in thermal contact with the slide duct and sealed off from the feed side. The apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a compacting press, a heated slide duct and a high-temperature reactor downstream of this. The side walls of the heated slide duct constructed with a rectangular cross-section, over at least some of the length in predetermined area sections, are provided with orifices which open out into side ducts which are also heated.
