Mining equipment for steering the cutting horizon (10) of a mining machine cutter (2) which is mounted on a ranging arm (3) and which makes repeated cutting traverses, comprises a boom (30) pivotally mounted on a support housing (31) fixedly secured to the ranging arm (3). Means are provided for urging the boom towards a rock or mineral boundary (10) to sense the cutting horizon made by the cutter on a previous traverse and sensor means sense the pivotal position of the boom with respect to the ranging arm.
