PURPOSE:To achieved good stable characteristics of a fuel cell electrode by using a noncrystal alloy composed of zirconium and at least one of the platinum group metals and coated with a porous active layer as the fuel cell electrode. CONSTITUTION:After a noncrystal alloy ribbon (thickness, 20mum) composed of Pt21Zr79 and that composed of (Pt0.21Zr0.79)91Sn9 are made by conventional simple rolling, the ribbon is immersed in a 5% hydrofluoric acid solution for 3-5min. This immersion treatment activates the surface of the noncrystal alloy and greatly improves its anodic oxidation. Steady state current-electric potential curves for the anodic oxidation of the above treated noncrystal alloys (ribbons) in a 0.5M aqueous sulfuric acid solution containing 1MCH3OH are shown in the figure. These curves indicate that the electrode activation level produced by the noncrystal alloy is significantly higher than that produced by the crystal alloy of the same composition. |
