A loft ladder comprises upper, intermediate and lower sections (4, 2, 1), the upper (4) and intermediate (2) sections being telescopically connected and preferably lockable in extended or retracted positions, and the intermediate (2) and lower (1) sections being pivotally connected by a hinge (3). The upper end of the upper section (4) is pivotally mounted to a floor (8) adjacent an opening so as to permit swinging movement in a first sense from a retracted position to an extended position and the pivotal movement afforded by the hinge (3) being such that relative pivoting of the intermediate and lower sections (2,1) in a sense opposite said first sense beyond a position wherein they are in end-to-end alignment is prevented.
