Aqueous solutions or dispersions of hydroxy-functional copolymers containing imide structural units, a process for their preparation by reacting the corresponding anhydride- and optionally carboxyl-functional copolymers with amino alcohols and optionally aminocarboxylic acids to form imides, and simultaneously and/or subsequently removing the water of reaction, neutralising the carboxyl groups which are then present, and dissolving or dispersing the product in water, and the use of the solutions or dispersions for the preparation of coating compositions, sealants or adhesives.
