The implement for making decorations on the surface of a membrane used for making surface coverings, comprises an impregnator for impregnating a membrane to form an impregnated membrane. There is at least one hopper downstream of the impregnator for containing solid particles, and having an outlet mouth for dispensing the solid particles. There is at least one applicator for applying the solid particles in a decorative pattern on the impregnated membrane. The applicator is disposed below the outlet mouth of the hopper and positioned to receive the impregnated membrane travelling from the impregnator in a membrane advancing direction.
