A method for attaching probes (912) to a test site formed in a substrate (900) comprising the steps of: forming a substrate; forming an adhesive material (902) in the test site which material enables probes to attach to the test sites; forming a protective coating (904) over the adhesive material; contacting the coating with a deprotecting material while selectively initiating a reacting at a selected site which removes the protective coating at the selected site; and contacting the deprotected site with probes which adhere to the adhesive material.
