A carbonated beverage container (10 fig. 3, 35 fig. 6, 40 fig. 7) includes a hollow insert 20 which floats on the beverage. The insert 20 has two one-way valves 28, 29, one of which 28 allows gas from a headspace above the beverage to enter the insert, the other 29 allowing gas from the insert to be jetted into the beverage upon opening the container. This jet of gas into the beverage causes shear, and the liberation of gas bubbles which form a close-knit creamy head on the beverage once dispensed. The insert may be moulded plastic or metal (fig. 1) and may include a deformable portion to allow its insertion into a container but not removal therefrom. <IMAGE>
