The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of diglycerol and/or polyglycerol in which isopropylidene glycerol is reacted with alpha -monochlorohydrin in the presence of at least one alkaline compound at temperatures from 10 to 110 DEG C to give monoisopropylidene diglycerol, optionally containing a proportion of monoisopropylidene triglycerol and/or monoisopropylidene tetraglycerol. The bulk of the resulting salt and/or the water is separated from the reaction mixture and the excess isopropylidene glycerol is removed by distillation and the monoisopropylidene diglycerol (optionally containing a proportion of monoisopropylidene triglycerol and/or monoisopropylidene tetraglycerol) is subsequently reacted in the presence of at least one acidic catalyst and/or of an acidic ion exchanger in the presence of water at temperatures between 20 and 110 DEG C to give diglycerol and/or triglycerol and/or other polyglycerols and acetone.
