Diphosphonic acid derivatives of the general formula: <IMG> (I) wherein: R1 is hydrogen or methyl, R2 is hydrogen or methyl, R3 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C5 alkyl, R4 is hydrogen or methyl, R5 is hydrogen or methyl, R6 is hydrogen, and m and n are or 0 or 1, or R1 and R2, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a morpholino ring, or R1 and R3, together with the carbon and nitrogen atoms to which they are attached form a pyrrolidine or piperidine ring, or R4 and R6, together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached form a cyclohexyl ring, or R5 and R6, together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a spirocyclopentane ring, and the pharmacologically compatible, pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof and the optical isomers thereof; the derivatives display a marked action on calcium metabolism and may be used for treatment of diseases of the skeletal system, for example, osteoporosis, Paget's disease and Bechterew's disease.
