PURPOSE:To discriminate quality of a printed character even when the printed character is printed at a position biased from a predetermined position by comparing feature quantity data included in a segmented range with reference feature quantity data. CONSTITUTION:A picture processing section 32 binarizes picture information selected by a field selection section 28 to calculate number of linked areas and gives a label to each area, and also calculates the area of each area and a quadrangle circumscribed to each area and decides the actual segmented range, and calculates feature quantity data representing the areas of all printed characters and the circumscribed quadrangles included in the actual segmented range and outputs the data to a picture discrimination section 34. Furthermore, a picture discrimination memory 38 stores the reference feature quantity data representing the area of all printed characters and the circumscribed quadrangle included in the reference segmentation range. The discrimination section 34 compares the feature quantity data to be received with the reference feature quantity data stored in the memory 38 to discriminate the propriety of the printed characters and provides an output of the discrimination result. |
