PURPOSE:To obtain a trimellitic ester acid anhydride of phenol of high purity by a novel method of using a specific inorganic compound as a transesterification catalyst, in a high yield under an industrially advantageous conditions. CONSTITUTION:By using an inorganic compound (favorably a synthetic zeolite) selected from among alumina compounds, alkaline (earth) metal compounds as a catalyst, a transesterification of a lower alkanoic ester of phenol (favorably an acetic ester) with trimellitic acid (anhydride) is performed at a temperature of preferably 200-280 deg.C to give an objective compound of the formula (A is a phenolic residue from which n of phenolic OH groups are removed; n is 1-4). Further in a batch reaction method, the amount of catalyst added is favorably 0.05-3wt.%. Also the above transesterification can be preferably performed while removing a produced lower alkanoic acid by the distillation from the reaction system. |
