Steering column including a steering shaft mounted in a body tube (1) equipped with: - a lower fastening lug (2) secured to the chassis of the vehicle; - a reinforcing square (4) locked on an upper fastening lug (3) by means of a locking bolt (5), the said upper fastening lug (3) being secured to the chassis of the vehicle; the reinforcing square (4) includes at least one deformable element which interacts with the locking bolt (5) under the action of an axial loading due to shock, so as to damp out the said shock axially, controlling the dissipated energy. <IMAGE>
