A workpiece-checking method, by which the mechanical production shop can be operated more efficiently, is to be indicated. Furthermore, the assurance of quality, particularly at the workplace, is to be increased. According to the invention, the workpiece-related preset dimensions are stored in a central computer for the machine tools of a production shop. Directly after an operation has been completed according to a work plan, the actual dimension is determined by the specialist operating the machine tool and is entered in the computer. After the workpiece has been finished, classification takes place by means of the computer by a comparison of the preset dimensions with the actual dimensions entered. The workpieces are classified in the classes "can be used without reworking", "can be used with reworking" and "reject".
