The locking of the back rest to the seat part of the vehicle seat is carried out by means of a catch hook which if appropriate is secured to the joint part, which is pivotably connected to the seat part, of a joint fitting which comprises an adjustment and fixing device for adjusting the angle of inclination of a back rest and is acted on by an energy accumulator in order to bring about locking. In the locked position, the mouth of the catch hook engages around a stop which is secured to the seat part. In order to be able to secure the catch hook in particular in the event of a crash, a locking plate is arranged next to the catch hook and is rotatably mounted on it by means of an axle and on the one hand engages around the bearing pin and a driver of the catch hook in the pivoting direction of the locking plate in a deflectable manner and on the other hand has a catch section which is supported in the locked position of the catch hook on a counterbearing which is permanently arranged in the joint part.
