In the case of a building element, especially one with an exterior window unit, in which solar cells are arranged between an outer pane and an inner pane, and with a further interior pane, which is provided at a distance from the window unit by means of a spacer frame defining an internal space, the solar cells are embedded in a casting resin layer, the inner pane is furthermore set back in its dimensions in the region of at least one edge at least partially with respect to the corresponding edge of the outer pane and thus forms a recess extending also over the casting resin layer, through which recess the necessary electrical leads are passed, the recess being covered towards the inner region of the building element by the spacer frame. Alternatively, the outer pane may be set back with respect to the inner pane.
