The testing of the quality of yarn packages, especially of cross-wound bobbins, as a rule takes place on transport devices which feed the cross-wound bobbins from the individual machines to a further work station. During the testing of a cross-wound bobbin which is not carried out on its winding device, although faults can be detected, it is nevertheless impossible to draw conclusions as to the winding device which has wound the cross-wound bobbin. According to the invention, therefore, it is proposed that the reading head (34) of a scanner be capable of being advanced by means of a holding device (33) to at least one face (3a, 3u) of the surfaces of the cross-wound bobbin (3), that the reading head be equipped with a one-line linear arrangement of the sensors recording the image spots, that the holding device (33) together with the reading head (34) be arranged on an apparatus (14) for changing the cross-wound bobbins (3), and that the holding device (33) be designed in such a way that the reading head (34) can be advanced to the cross-wound bobbin (3) located in the bobbin receptacle (4) of a machine (1) producing cross-wound bobbins. <IMAGE>
