The invention relates to a high-speed transshipment terminal for the transshipment of piece goods in the form of loading units, such as containers, interchangeable containers, semi-trailers and the like, between road and rail vehicles, between rail vehicles or between road vehicles, consisting of multi-tier shelves for the loading units and lifting appliances for transferring the loading units, in which the vehicles to be loaded and unloaded move in each case directly on their route into the terminal resembling multi-tier shelves, a shelf-servicing apparatus movable along the vehicles and having a vertically adjustable lifting truck, and a laterally movable load pick-up means for transporting the loading units travel in a common shelf aisle with the vehicles. The device according to the invention is characterised by very small space requirement, short transport distances and rapid transshipment times.
